Okay, it's not really an empire, per se. But we did open that second room.

Last Monday was AWESOME. People were running back and forth, singing in BOTH
rooms. If you can get the tempo down, it works well. Just remember, if we call your name
and you don't come down, we're moving on to the next singer and you miss your slot.
We have to keep the show moving along....

Don't forget, the new door cover is ONLY $2 ALL NIGHT, and you'll pay $2 per song,
when you get called up to the mic.

    We'll see you tonight!

    Watchmen review
It was interesting for me to go see WATCHMEN with Jesse and her friend Nadia and Nadia's boyfriend Jesper. Out of the three of us, I was the only one to have read the series, so it was up to Zac Snyder to bring the characters and the plot to life for the uninitiated.

Being the comic dork that I am, I read the series right off the racks as it came out over the course of 15 months back in the mid-80's. You can say I'm a big fan, and have personally recommended it to non-comic people looking for an intellectually stimulating read. Since I knew that Snyder basically filmed the graphic novel almost exactly panel by panel, I had read the reviews online before seeing the film, something I usually don't do with movies I'm anxious to see. I knew the reviews were mixed, I knew the ending had changed, and tried to keep an open mind.

The only thing I really disliked about the movie was some of the music cues. Using "Sounds of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel for a funeral scene sounds good on paper, as does Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" for a sex scene, but put into practice it was corny. Really corny. So corny in fact that it was almost laughable. Nevertheless, when I read the series as a teenager, I always imagined Nite Owl and Roarschach approaching the Antartic base of Ozymandias with the Jimi Hendrix version of "All Along The Watchtower" playing, which is exactly what happened in the movie. I know my pal [info]thefreak  took issue with this, but this one music cue HAD to be there, as Moore quoted the song right after that scene in the comic. The opening montage to Bob Dylan's "Times They Are A-Changing" worked for me as well, but the sex scene would have been much better with an instrumental track.

And what a sex scene! The hottest by far in a comic book movie. I might need some alone time with the DVD.

Since the big blue shmeckel of Billy Crudup has already been mentioned quite a bit on the internets, my only comment would be to say kudos to Snyder for letting Dr. Manhattan let it all hang out. It didn't bother me, and I feel if I can look at Malin Ackerman in all her hotness, my wife can enjoy Crudup's glowing gonads.

As for the ending, to me it worked better than the cthuloid alien squid. It made more sense in the context of the film, and was much easier for the uninitiated to accept in terms of a climax.

Speaking of the uninitiated, Jesse and her friends all enjoyed the movie. None of them were confused by it and were able to follow the plot quite well. Despite the length, none of them lost interest and everyone got the jist of it. That says a lot for the movie. In fact, more than anything else, that is what gets my thumbs up.

[info]darqleo mentioned to me the other night that the creator of the Joker was having an art show in Los Angeles. I thought to myself "Isn't Bob Kane and Bill Finger the guys who created Batman, Robin, Catwoman and The Joker... and aren't they both dead?" But you can curse me for a novice and take away some of my nerd points for not bringing Jerry Robinson into the equation. Jerry designed the Joker's signature card and look and worked on the original Joker story published in Batman #1. HE is the one who is showing some golden age comic art (including the original Joker card) at the Skirball Museum right now. More info here

In karaoke news, Ministry's "What About Us?", Jesus and Mary Chain's "April Skies" and Human League's 'Love Action" will be coming to Ground Control in the next few weeks.

Unextraordinary Gentlemen were great last night. The Knitting Factory scene was a lot like the club Bricktops, which was a fantastic club in the Hollywood area circa 2003. Erik, Richard and Jennifer sounded great, but the mix was a bit loud. Either that or I'm too old.

Red Light District opened the show and their singer was incredibly charming and engaging with the audience. I'm afraid I was leering at her a bit, as I felt like a dirty old man. Jesse has nothing to worry about though...

David J showed up near the end of the UEG set with a guy with a beard who began chatting with me and said we went back a long time... As Jill Tracy played her set (which was melancholy and beautiful), I wanted to introduce David to Shreek, who were both standing nearby, but knew I would have to introduce the bearded fellow as well... even though I still couldn't place him. He looked familiar, but it would be embarrassing if I had to ask him who he was after chatting with him all night.

Finally I just went and did it, and he told me he was Ego Plum, a fantastic experimental musician who I totally didn't recognize with a beard. I even used some of his instrumental tracks as Wrong Dimension Boy backings...

Glad I got to introduce Erik to David J. If they ever had time to really chat I believe they would both get along quite well.

Boy was I having a man-period last night and this morning. Feel much better now that I got new contact lenses. Can you believe my eyes are up to -8? Got some new glasses for the first time in a long time. I think they're sort of Flight of The Conchordsesque...

Anyway, a never-before-seen 3D lenticular of mine is going to be in this WATCHMEN themed art show at Meltdown Comics in Hollywood, and people should go cuz it's gonna be fun:

    7:43 am
Ever since I got my new contacts I've been having migranes. It took me a few days before I realized the eye doctor sent me lenses that were too strong, so I've been wearing my glasses the last week and a half. Combine this with the fact that money has been tight and I haven't had the $$ for a decent haircut in almost 2 months and you get me with a Jew-fro, coke-bottle glasses and super low self esteem. Now throw in the fact that unemployment told me yesterday that my former supervisor reported to them that it wasn't the economy that caused me to get fired, but my shiteous performance. Gee, if I knew that they were that disappointed I wouldn't have worked all those hours of overtime and put my heart and soul into that horrible horrible job. If I don't get unemployment, I'm fucked. Goodbye Dr. Strange collection. Goodbye trying to find a decent teaching gig. I will have to suck cock to get a job waiting tables in this economy.

Now cut to last night, with all this on my mind I was really hoping Ground Control Karaoke would cheer me up a bit. The minute I walk in the club Kate says "Jeez, Howard, you look like Bernie Madoff!" Wow. Thanks. I look like one of the most hated guys on the planet. Sensing I was a little upset by the comment, Jonni tried to soothe it by saying "Naaah, you look a little like that guy from Ferris Bueller... Ben Stein." Wow, with my glasses and hair I must look like the ugliest Jewiest Kikey Kikelstein EVER.

I turned around and left before people started throwing bagels at me.

Then I get home and how does Jesse try to make me feel better? By telling me I need to go to the gym more. So I guess I'm a fatass as well. I went to sleep utterly defeated and feeling like shit. Today isn't much better, but at least I have an eye appointment today so I can get the right contact lenses.

I'm disabling comments to this post because I don't want any "AWW, Cheer up" or (((Hugs))) responses from my friends. Just wanted to post this so folks know why you won't see me around for a while.

    WTF??
I'm always surprised when the karaoke companies put out a track I'd never thought I'd see outside of Ground Control.

45 GRAVE'S "Party Time" just got released today.

OK, I know Return of The Living Dead has a decent cult following, but WOW.

    Here's the linkage:

Apparently "Evil" is available as well. Wonder if Don Bolles and Dinah Cancer are getting a cut from this... Hope so.

In other karaoke news, a yet-to-be-announced Flight of The Conchords track will be available by the end of the month.

My brother likes to tease me about possible horrible casting choices for the upcoming Doctor Strange Movie. Nothing he has ever mentioned in jest would be as bad as this.
